Margaret River gets Electric Avenue

Drivers of electric cars will soon have drastically improved access to the Margaret River Region, with RAC officially launching its ‘Electric Highway®’ next week – the first of its kind in Australia.

The RAC Electric Highway is a network of publicly accessible electric vehicle fast-charging DC stations located between Perth and Augusta, allowing electric car owners to travel to and from the Margaret River Region in the safest, most sustainable and efficient way possible.

The stations support RAC’s sustainable mobility agenda and work in reducing carbon dioxide emissions from cars in WA, and will also allow car owners to charge their eco-friendly machines in only 30 minutes – a dramatic reduction on the 10-12 hours it can sometimes take.

RAC Executive General Manager Pat Walker said RAC is proud to launch Australia’s first Electric Highway, and believes it will have a strong impact on intrastate tourism for the Margaret River Region. “The RAC Electric Highway will enable owners of electric vehicles to travel to the State’s South West, and will benefit the region by attracting electric vehicle drivers to destinations along the route” said Mr Walker.

“RAC has a long tradition of providing tourism services to members. We believe this exciting new project will generate benefits to the local tourism industry in the South West.“ Augusta Margaret River Tourism Association CEO Pip Close advised it would be a great advantage for electric car owners in Perth and greater Western Australia.

“Perth and intrastate is our biggest market, so to increase accessibility to the Margaret River Region by introducing an Electric Highway is a fantastic idea,” said Ms Close. It shows real innovation and foresight – the number of electric car owners is destined to increase. It also complements the region’s clean, green outlook, so we are delighted to support this initiative from RAC,” she said.

The RAC Electric Highway will be official launched next Monday, 22 June in Margaret River.

Yet Another Great Vintage from Margaret River?

Margaret River’s 2015 white wine vintage has been completed with many wine producers reporting their earliest ever finish some as early as the first week in March!

Fruit quality is again very good; Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon displays intense varietal characteristics such as crisp natural acidity on the palate accompanied by a citrus to lemon and lime fruit aromas on the nose. Chardonnay also has a great length to its acidity and with quite soft line of phenolics.  Profile flavours cover the spectrum from early Summer peach to nectarine as well as a fine contour of citrus.

Quality as usual is high across Margaret River, however yields are down across the board – as high as 20% to 25% throughout the region.  Since early March a more autumn weather pattern came into being, with cooler night time temperatures being reported.  This has effectively extended the ripening period for red wine varieties quite nicely giving them more ‘hang time’ to enhance fruit development flavour profiles with softer tannin levels arising as a consequence.

Culinary trail breaks new tourism ground in Margaret River

A new food and wine trail handbook has been created to provide visitors with an exclusive guide to the Margaret River Region’s small-batch producers of food and wine. The guide, which is being officially launched today at Fair Harvest

Inspirational Food and Wine Journeys

Inspirational Food and Wine Journeys

Margaret River, is the brainchild of the Augusta Margaret River Tourism Association (AMRTA) and has been produced collaboratively and with funding assistance from the Shire of Augusta Margaret River and the Margaret River Regional Producers Association. Titled ‘Inspirational Food and Wine Journeys’, the handbook contains profiles on 19 local producers, personal recipes and a map to allow visitors to follow the trail around the region.

AMRTA’s Simon Latchford said “Visitors want to do more than just take a photo these days. They want to touch, smell, taste, get their hands dirty; go behind the scenes to meet a winemaker, a chef, a gardener – it’s not just about the produce itself; it’s about the people behind the produce.

“This guide also celebrates the ‘little guys’ – the aim is to build awareness for the outstanding food, wine and produce being generated by these smaller-scale, somewhat understated farmgate producers, who don’t necessarily have the brand power of some of the bigger stakeholders in the industry,” said Mr Latchford.

Copies of the guide are free, and will be available at the Margaret River Farmers’ Markets, the Margaret River and Augusta Visitor Centres, and selected local outlets.
