Seize The Day and Discover Your Passion

Peter Milhinch became interested in wine at a young age. His interest quickly turned into a passion during Peter’s university years in Melbourne.  But it wasn’t until 1999 when Peter and wife Sharyn Rogers planned to establish a ten acre vineyard where vines had first been planted back in the mid 1800s.  They renovated the adjacent early settler’s cottage as an exclusive vineyard retreat for two.

Milhinch Wines vineyard of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes lay as testament to not only the soils of the western Barossa but also Peter’s skill and enthusiasm for these vines.  While there is no cellar door as such, the 5 star settler’s cottage (Seppeltsfield Vineyard Cottage) is an ideal location to escape to and enjoy the hospitality of the hosts.   Sharyn and Peter live nearby on the property and can offer their local knowledge to help you enjoy the food, wine, history and sights of the Barossa.

With a focus on sustainable viticultural practices, such as minimal irrigation, green manure crops, and improving soil health, Milhinch Wines produce wines which are generally softer and more alluring than some of their Western Barossa counterparts.

The following wines were tasted after being decanted for several hours and then again the next day – as guided by Peter.

2008 Milhinch Wines – Single Vineyard Shiraz

A complex nose of ripe dark berries with good intensity. Savoury olive notes and hints of floral violets.  Oak doesn’t overwhelm at all, even though it’s seen 22 months – must have been older oak to be so restrained.  On the palate the ripe dark and red berries are balanced with a nice tingly acid.  Full bodied.  Probably not as complex as the nose suggests, but the softness of the tannins keep you coming back for more.  Some wines you can drink by the glass, this you can drink by the bottle.

2009 Milhinch Wines – Single Vineyard Shiraz/Cabernet

A 60% Shiraz 40% Cabernet blend. The aromas show a diverse range of mocha, sweet spice with touches of black pepper.  Ripe plum and mulberry providing lots of varietal fruitiness, with none of the typical Cabernet herbaceousness.  The full bodied palate however does show more of the Cabernet characters, as well as providing more noticeable grip with fine chalky tannins.  Again the oak is subtle and won’t leave you battered and bruised.  Deserves food, ideally char-grilled red meat.
