It’s a well known fact that winemakers love to play. Now you can play at being a winemaker and make just the same amount of mess as a real one. Penfolds in Barossa introduced the idea of ‘Make Your Own Blend’ a few years ago. It’s a great way for visitors to the well known wine region, to put on a white lab coat and head into the actual winemakers lab to try their hand a blending a GSM wine (Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre).
Visitors are provided with current barrel samples of eachof the three varieties from the Barossa Valley wine region, as well as an example of the current GSM from Penfolds. They can then try to reproduce the same blend as Penfolds Bin 138, using the aromas and flavours which each wine variety brings to the blend. Or blend together a style which is more to their personal liking. Some prefer a bigger bolder style with more shiraz, some prefer the lightness and aromatic lift of Grenache.
Either way, it’s a great way to learn about blending varieties of wine and how the final blend can be greater than the sum of the parts. And without doubt, no matter how hard you try, you will make a mess – just like a real wine maker.
