Royal Adelaide Wine Show: 2608 Wines & My Head Hurts

The Royal Adelaide Wine Show is a huge event –  2608 wines to be precise.  So much choice, so much diversity, your head hurts even before you start tasting. What was great to see was the broad range of styles.  More cooler climate Shiraz, more off-dry Riesling, more top notch Chardonnay, and some impressive Pinot Noir. Sue Hodder, chairman of judges, said a total of 192 gold medals, 243 silver medals and 815 bronze medals were awarded.

While the wines provided a broad range of styles, the audience of the VIP tasting was clearly broken into three categories: Older men in tweed jackets with red noses, middle aged men in stripped shirts who can spit across a room with deadly accuracy, and young hippster men with beards (clearly part of the up and coming sommelier set).  There may have been a female present, I’m not certain.

Saltram Estate shiraz scored two top trophies at the 2013 Royal Adelaide Wine Show. Saltram’s Mamre Shiraz 2010 also receiving the award for Best Shiraz in Show. Saltram is also the latest recipient of the Outstanding Wine of Provenance award which was created, to recognise wines that reflect their region, lineage and longevity.
